Soodhu Kavvum is a dark comedy a path less travelled by commercial Tamil cinema , Nalan has choosen this path and come out with applause. The film is about three youngsters who are jobless and Dass a small time kidnapper. The film takes its own time to settle and once it sets , we are on a run for twists and turns which keeps cropping up every now and then. On the surface level the film seems to be inspired by Snatch a Guy Ritchie film but the film has its own uniqueness . The characterization and casting are perfect. Some of Nalan’s regular actors from his short films are retained here too , like the one playing  Arumai Pragasam (karna Karan ) role and he is amazing.

Vijay Sethupathi – a still from Soodhu Kavum

Vijay Sethupathi is definitely the man to look out for , his choice of films , roles and his line-up of films look interesting , he is slowwly emerging as acting powerhouse . His looks in this film are rather unusual from his normal , as he is playing a forty year old man.His imaginary girl friend Shalu played Shanjitha Shetty adds up for the fun and glamour quotient .

The film’s story revolves around a partially failed kidnap of Dass and gang which lands them in trouble with inspector Brhama , which makes them go on the run . Nalan could have given a better treatment to the Brhama character as it looks too much at times for his over build up. And the two small song sequence towards the second half could have been done away with.

The uncoventional background score by Santhosh Narayanan is the major plus for the film , the editing and cinematography are apt . The Visual effects in the interval portion could have been better.

On the whole the film is full of fun an thrills . Don’t miss this one !

Verdict – Dark Comedy at its best !
