2013 : The Year of Sequels
Here’s a look into the sequels that are to release this year:
A Good Day to Die Hard – Yes, that’s right, yet another Die Hard movie is to release this year, which is the 25th year after the release of the first Die Hard movie! The franchise has grossed over a billion dollars with its five previous films, and Bruce Willis, older than ever, will continue to be the lead. The response for the action – thriller – entertainer films in this franchise have generally been from mixed to positive. For some reason, Valentine’s Day has been chosen as the Goode Day to release this Die Hard movie!
G.I. Joe: Retaliation – The first G.I. Joe was criticized negatively, but did manage to run the show and gross decent amounts, albeit audience complaining about lack of relevance to the original characters. The sequel has an ensemble cast with Bruce Willis and Dwayne Johnson being notable additions, and is set for release on March 29.
Scary Movie 5 – For all the spoof fans, here comes ‘the fifth and final part of the four-part trilogy’. The notorious franchise is back after a long break of seven years, and brings us ‘Scary MoVie’ starring Charlie Sheen and Lindsey Lohan as themselves amongst others. The film has Black Swan and Paranormal Activity as the two main parodies along with several others including Inception, The Hunger Games and the Final Destination series. It is scheduled to release internationally on April 19th.
Iron man 3 – The millionaire playboy genius is back again with his next stylish adventure, which is much-awaited by the huge fan following of the franchise. Tony Stark has come to give a new look at superheroes most of all due to Robert Downey Jr’s sheer brilliance in the personification of the comic book character of the same name. The spontaneous dialogues of the first movie (as the initial script had not chosen to focus on the reality quotient and the story more than dialogues) gave birth to the popular character, and the second movie was a critical as well as commercial success. Iron Man 3 is set to release on April 25th internationally in 3D.
Star Trek Into the Darkness – The twelfth installment of the Star Trek series comes with most of the crew from the earlier films of the franchise. Directed by J. J. Abrams, almost all actors reprise their roles from the 2009 film, with a few additions. The film is to release on May 17th.
Fast and Furious 6 – The sixth film of the underground car racing movie franchise is set to break the ice and rope in a wider audience by moving into a different genre, with racing as merely one of the elements. It is to release May 24.
The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug – The Hobbit : An unexpected Journey wasn’t all that much of a success despite the amount of work put into the film in terms of settings and the visuals. The second part of Peter Jackson’s trilogy that itself is a prequel to the LOTR trilogy is to release on the 13th of December, a year after the release of the first part.
The Wolverine – Hugh Jackman is all set to reprise his role of Wolverine, easily the favourite of the X-Men for many, as a sequel to X-Men Origins – Wolverine. This shall be the sixth installment of the hugely popular X-Men franchise, and is to release in July.
Hangover part 3 – The third film in the adult comedy – based Hangover franchise is set to release on May 24. Not much is known about the plot or the cast yet.
Kick-ass 2 – The sequel to the very different superhero movie, Kick-Ass that gained a cult following, with positive responses from both critics and audience, despite the violence and profanity by a little girl, is set to release this June.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire – After the positive critical reviews and massive Box-office success of the first adaptation of the novel, the second part set to release in November will naturally have high expectations.
Thor : The Dark World – The sequel to the 2011 film Thor is to release on November 8.
Grown-Ups 2 – The sequel to the 2010 American buddy comedy film is to release in July.
Apart from all these, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, Red 2, Evil Dead, horror film Insidious Chapter 2, Bad Santa 2, The Bronx Bull (based on the classic film Raging Bull, also about the boxer James LaMotta), possibly Tomb Raider, Monsters University, 300 : Rise of an Empire and The Lone Ranger are some other sequels, prequels and (some of them) rumoured releases to look forward to in this ‘Year of Sequels’.
